Review: True Match liquid foundation by L'Oreal

Although this foundation definitely isn't a newcomer, I had tried it a while back when I was in high school and after trying it again, I feel like it is a totally new product from the one I had back in the day. Either the formulation or my application has changed since high school because it feels like a totally new product to me.

The thing that initially attracted me to this foundation is the fact that it comes in a variety of shades, something that drugstore brands were lacking but have since improved. I picked up the shade W6, which is the same one I wore back in the day. It seems like a pretty popular one because I know that many girls who seem like they have varying skin tones use this specific color.

Here is what the L'Oreal Paris website has to say about it:
"True Match Super-Blendable Makeup precisely matches your skin’s tone and texture and coordinates perfectly with True Match Powder, Blush and Concealer. Formulated with Precise Match Technology so you can control coverage and fine-tune it. Ultra-pure formula contains no oils, fragrances, or pore-clogging fillers, so all you see is beautiful, radiant, flawless skin.

Finish: Natural
SPF: 17
Coverage: Light to medium
Skin Type: For all skin types"

PACKAGING - The packaging is one of the biggest cons about this product because it just isn't very user friendly (or sanitary). I saw that apparently the bottles in the UK have a pump and I just wish they would do the same for us North Americans! In order to apply the foundation, you have to pour it out which in turn results in wasting the product and can make things a little messy.

TEXTURE & APPLICATION - The foundation is liquid but isn't watery - it has a slight creamy texture. I like to apply a little bit on each of my areas (cheeks, nose, forhead, etc) using my finger and then blend it out with whatever brush/sponge I choose. I love blending it using the Beauty Blender sponge (I wrote a review on that here) and it just melts into my skin. I have also used a MAC 130 brush which is a stippling brush with shorter bristles and it blended in nicely it just took more time to get that airbrushed look. You can apply it with your fingers or a regular foundation brush and I think you'd get more coverage out of that.

COVERAGE & FINISH- I would classify this foundation as a medium coverage but buildable to full... not really sure where the light coverage they advertise comes into play. It can look cakey and unnatural if you apply too much so I would suggest starting with a little and then building layers as you go. The finish is natural, which means that it isn't completely matte nor is it dewy. It just looks like natural skin which I really like.

LONGEVITY - If you have oily skin I would strongly recommend that you set your foundation with a powder. Although my skin isn't super oily, I like to set it with MAC Careblend powder during the summer months because my t-zone does tend to get a little oily as the day goes on. During the winter I don't feel the need to set it at all since my skin is dryer. I would say that the foundation stays put for 6 or so hours before needing a touch up.

Here is a picture of me wearing it applied with the Beauty Blender sponge (let me know if you want to know what else I'm wearing):

I am SO happy I gave this foundation another chance. Although I don't wear it daily (I usually just dust a little mineralized powder on during the week days), it is definitely one of my go-to liquid foundations for days when I want to take it up a notch. For less than $10 a bottle, I strongly urge you see if you have a match!

  4. Let me just say this first, you're pretty. Really. Do you even know that you're pretty? I'm a little jealous!

I was wondering if you could help me with something. I got this foundation only two months ago, in shade W7. But it seems to be a tad dark on my NC42-44 skin. Shade W6 isn't available in Malaysia (where i'm from) and Paris (where i'm currently at), unfortunately, so there's no way of testing out W6 before i attempt to buy it online. I read that you're an NC37-40, so do you think it means W6 might be too light for me? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    1. Thanks Liyana! I think W6 should be good and if it's a bit too fair, mix it with the W7 and make your perfect shade. Also, please note that my foundation is the Canadian version so the shade me a tad different. Let me know how it worked out if you decide to try it! :)
